Many Hands

artwork by Julie Chen/ Flying Fish Press

Many Hands offers an opportunity for the reader’s hands to interact with letterpress printed images of the hands of many women in the arts through an interactive artist’s book that must be manipulated through a series of rotations. The accompanying text is a meditation on spaces such as the National Museum of Women in the Arts, that were created by and for women to highlight and foster women’s participation in the arts. How do these spaces not only help create equity but also offer opportunities for the creation of artwork that could only be created by women who are drawing on their particular life experiences and perspectives?

Many Hands includes a letterpress printed artist’s book in the form of a large rotating ring, a Riso printed companion book and a woven bead necklace which was fabricated by Marigold Beads, a women’s collective of beaders in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The necklace contains a quote by Georgia O'Keeffe. The set is housed in a large box.
